(Official Event of Expo '86 held in Vancouver, B.C.)
In celebration of the opening of Steam Expo '86 on May 23rd, 1986, the organizers commissioned a First Day Cover for "The Grand Parade of Steam" held on the Opening Day of the Steam Extravaganza. Steam Expo ran for ten days in late May and early June, 1986 in the CN yards just east of the Expo '86 site. The event included the largest gathering of live steam and replica locomotives since the Rail Fair in Chicago in 1948. A total of 18 steam locomotives participated in the Grand Parade of Steam on the opening day of Steam Expo '86. The parade was held on the CPR tracks on the Vancouver waterfront and was led by the Royal Hudson #2860 and she arrived at the CPR station 99 years after the arrival of the first transcontinental passenger train in Vancouver. The stamp was a special issue by Canada Post of an 2-8-2 type locomotive and was stamped on the opening day of Steam Expo at the Vancouver post office. A rare combination of envelope, stamp and cancellation and only available on the one day back on May 23rd, 1986.
