'Ocean to Ocean'
A rare book published in 1873 on Sir Sanford Fleming
This almost 150 year old book covers Sir Sanford Fleming's Expedition across Canada in 1872. 372 pages with 60 illustrations (see photos). Sanford was a surveyor but also designed Canada's first postage stamp 'The Threepenny Beaver'. He became Canada's foremost Railway Construction Engineer, first for the Intercolonial Railway built from Quebec to the Maritimes in the 1860's, then the Grand Trunk Railway and finally the Canadian Pacific Railway. As surveyor and construction engineer, he became a strong advocate for the construction of iron bridges on all rail lines instead of wood for safety reasons.
This book is in very good condition considering its age. Binding is intact. No torn or ripped pages. Outer spine shows some wear at the top and bottom and the four corners of the front and back covers also show some wear (see cover photo). Some pages show minor discolouration (see photos).
